Canon's EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a short-telephoto lens that features a compressed perspective for attractive images. Its f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for subject isolation and narrow depth of field methods, as well as operating in low-light environments. A Super Spectra coating has been sprayed to individual elements to help produce outstanding colour fidelity and contrast while reducing reflections, lens flare, and ghosting. Furthermore, a ring-type USM is used to provide speedy and quiet autofocus as well as full-time manual focus adjustment.
The portrait-length of short-telephoto prime is designed to provide full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, though it may also be used with APS-C models for a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Working in low-light circumstances is made easier with the bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, which also gives you more control over the depth of field when using selective focus techniques.
To provide fast, precise, and silent autofocus as well as full-time manual focus override, a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is used. Furthermore, the front of the lens does not spin during focusing, making it easier to use polarising and graded filters.
Individual pieces have been coated with Super Spectra to reduce ghosting and flare for improved contrast and colour neutrality when working in bright light.
The rounded eight-blade diaphragm gives a pleasing out-of-focus quality, making shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques more effective.
